Are Davie Mac Tile’s Reviews Real?

A story we are not proud of, but will tell anyway

A while back, we did a job we are not proud of. The work was not up to our standard, and the customer was right to be disappointed. He left us a one-star review, and in it he wrote something that stuck with us: that he should have known better, that all those five-star reviews seemed too good to be true.

Here is what we did. We did not argue with him online. We did not get defensive. We went to see him in person, face to face. We apologized for the work, we refunded his money in full, and we paid him on top of that for a faucet he said we damaged.

We never asked him to take down his review. That was not the point. The point was to make it right because it was the right thing to do. He chose to remove it himself afterward, but that was his decision, not something we requested.

We are telling you this because it is the honest answer to your question. The reviews are not perfect because we are perfect. They look the way they do because when we fall short, we own it and we fix it.

The numbers, and where they come from

We complete between 60 and 100 tile jobs in a typical year, and we have been installing tile since 2001. When a project is finished and the customer has signed off, we ask every one of them to leave an honest review. Not just the happy ones. Everyone.

Over more than a decade of doing that, the reviews add up. More than 80 on Google, and over 110 across every platform combined including Facebook, Houzz, and Yelp. For a company doing this volume for this long, that is not a suspicious number. It is a steady trail built one finished job at a time.

About Yelp

If you check us on Yelp, you will see something worth understanding. Yelp uses an automated filter that moves many legitimate reviews into a section it calls “not currently recommended,” something it does to a lot of small businesses. So our Yelp page shows only a handful of reviews up front, with many more good ones tucked behind that filter.

You will also find an older review there from someone who never became a customer. He was upset that we did not return his calls during a stretch when we were buried in work. That was a real shortcoming on our end at the time. It is also exactly why we have since put real systems in place to answer and return every call, including after-hours coverage and dedicated office support. We would rather fix the cause than hide the complaint.
